My name is Maria Shumskaya and I am currently an Associate Professor at Kean University, New Jersey, USA. I work in the field of Plant/Fungi Science and teach several college level courses on Biochemistry, Bioinformatics and Plant Science.
I studied biology and chemistry at the Moscow State University, Russia, and graduated magna cum laude in 2000 with a Masters Degree in Biochemistry. Sophisticated structure of photosynthetic organisms sparked my interest in molecular biology of Cyanobacteria, which I worked with both at the Institute for Plant Physiology, Russia, and at the National Institute for Basic Biology, Japan. I completed my PhD in Plant Biochemistry in 2004 and then continued with the research on proteomics of Cyanobacteria as a post-doc at Stockholm University, Sweden. In 2008, I moved to the City University of New York to investigate carotenoid biosynthesis and metabolism of maize. I stayed as a post-doc and a doctoral lecturer until 2016 when I moved to Kean University.
My current research interest is diversity and metabolism of fungi inhabiting dead wood.
